SUPPORT FROM NH AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER

For over three years, our farm has been in a battle for our livelihood in the town of Newfields, New Hampshire. From our challenges with the Newfields Planning Board to our neighbors suing us (and the town of Newfields)—it’s been a slog to say the least. Unfortunately, this battle is far from over.

To Whom it May Concern,

I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate my support for Vernon Family Farm and the important role they play in New Hampshire's agricultural community. As I wrote in 2022, testified to the Newfields Planning Board, and stand by today: I wish we had 100 more farms like this one in New Hampshire

Vernon Family Farm exemplifies what agritourism is meant to be: a working farm that attracts people to its property so the farmers can sell their products directly to the public. This innovative approach is exactly how farms like Vernon Family Farm sustain themselves and engage with the community, providing fresh, local food in a space for people to connect with agriculture.

I understand there have been claims that Vernon Family Farm is violating the conservation easement or that their activities do not qualify as agritourism. However, these are determinations that fall under the jurisdiction of the Town of Newfields. The Town, as the holder of the easement and the governing body for zoning matters, has confirmed that Vernon Family Farm's activities are indeed agritourism. Furthermore, I commend the Vernons for adhering to these guidelines while operating a farm that serves as a community hub without negatively impacting neighbors or causing traffic and parking concerns.

New Hampshire's agricultural landscape depends on innovative farms like Vernon Family Farm, which strike a balance between traditional farming and modern-day needs. Their commitment to sustainability, community involvement, and local food production is a shining example of what we should be striving for across the state.

I will continue to support Vernon Family Farm as they navigate these challenges, and I remain hopeful that their efforts will inspire other farms to explore similar models of agritourism that benefit both farmers and the communities they serve.
